Something Truly Goddamn Strange Is Going On: Netflix Assembles ALL the Stars for What Looks to Be a Most Excellent Thriller, Velvet Buzzsaw

Holy, where did this come from? Netflix just released a teaser for a murderous thriller set in the art world, and the cast is so utterly glorious, I nearly peed with excitement (yes, just like a tiny dog) when each person in the trailer made an appearance. Written and directed by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler), Velvet Buzzsaw introduces Jake Gyllenhaal as a delightfully odd and requisitely pretentious art critic with the appropriately ridiculous name of Morf Vandewalt, and that’s only the beginning of the fun. Because, not only does Morf apparently piss off a psycho artist whose paintings may or may not come to life, and attack/kill people, but he does it while surrounded by some of the best actors we could ever want to show up in a bizarre art world horror flick. Check it:

Whoever brought Rene Russo back into the art world, THANK YOU.

One of my favorites since Muriel’s Wedding; Toni Collette amps up anything she’s in.

And if we’re in crazytown — which, clearly, we now are — it’s a given that John Malkovich has to be around somewhere.

Rounding out the cast is the fantastic (*fanning self*) Daveed Diggs,

Zawee Ashton,

Stranger Things‘ Natalia Dyer,

and … Hoboman (Mark Steger).

Velvet Buzzsaw also stars Peter Gadiot, Tom Sturridge, and John Fleck; it debuts on Netflix February 1, 2019.
