If the mere mention of those headline items makes your body quiver, you’ve seen Dennis Kelly’s brilliant Utopia in its original British form. Of course, like most good British series, we state-siders feel the need to put out our own (let’s face it, usually inferior) Americanized version. In this case, plans for HBO to partner with director, David Fincher and writer Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl, Sharp Objects, Dark Places) , and the possibility that Rooney Mara might take one of the leads, there was reason for excitement … until budget issues between Fincher and HBO shut down the production. In the end, fans weren’t necessarily upset over that loss; we were still smarting over the original’s cancellation at Channel 4. With stars like Fiona O’Shaughnessy, Stephen Rea, Adeel Akhtar, Neil Maskell, Paul Ready, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and a fantastic, dark conspiracy, the thriller featured one of the most unforgettable torture sequences you’ll ever see — and a pair of the most fearsome (and lovable — well, one of them) killers you’ll ever meet. If you’ve already seen, or don’t mind being spoiled for the new series, here’s psychopathic Lee (Ready) at his wicked best (*Warning*: Not for the squeamish!):
As of yesterday, the remake found new life at Amazon, with Flynn remaining at the helm. It’s not yet clear whether Fincher is still attached, or any of the cast previously assembled for the HBO version will reboard but in partnership with Amazon, the new Utopia will likely find a great group of actors. If Flynn is really smart, she’ll try to tempt some of the original series’ group back.
We’ll update as more information becomes available.
