Valentine’s Dreams: If You Can’t Be with the One You Love … Love the Black Panther Cast

I mean, does it get any more breathtaking gorgeous than that header photo?

Well …

The major Black Panther players — Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Michael B. Jordan, Letitia Wright and Forest Whitaker — cover the March edition of Essence magazine, and I’m pretty sure we couldn’t have gotten a better Valentine’s gift than these gorgeous photos, and some of their thoughts on what the Marvel movie means.

The idea of creating a scenario where you’re seeing very powerful, empowered Africans is really thrilling to me, something my heart, soul, and spirit yearned to see.” Danai Gurira

We understand the responsibility. That it can shift mind-sets. I can be a Black superhero. I can be a scientist. I’m a queen. I’m a young prince. It’s not about me. It’s bigger than me. It’s bigger than all of us…” Letitia Wright

For me, as an African in this film, to walk on set and to see these incredible costumes and hairdos, these are the things I grew up seeing, but they’ve just been elevated to a fantastical place. We’re going to experience the richness of the continent, because the continent is what has informed us of what Wakanda could be…”  Lupita Nyong’o

But a queen is a queen is a queen of a Black nation. Just to have that opportunity to portray that image—me, a little Black girl from the Florida projects.” Angela Bassett

What’s that you say? There’s video, too?

Ayup.

Read more at Essence, and you should probably pick up a copy to frame.

And, catch Black Panther in theaters this weekend!

  • My God, the beauty, the power and confidence exuded by these stars is brighter than the Sun. I cannot wait to take my six year old son to this movie so that he can see POC be powerful, strong and super-heroic! All of the heroes he has been exposed to are white, as he is… I want his eyes to be opened.
