With years of rumors that he might take over one of the biggest film franchises under his belt — and us, breathless at the thought — it seems Idris Elba is done tiptoeing around.
He’s always been pretty straight about how much he’d love to take on 007 and word on the street is he’s on MGM’s shortlist, but with Daniel Craig heading up his final outing, and rumors that some people think Elba is too old
Idris knows it’ll be a while before a decision is made. And just in case anyone is confused about what should happen, he’s plainly addressing the issue.
There’s no such think as a black Bond, it’s just … are we interested in having a character, a Bond character, other than being a male, it could be a woman, it could be a black woman, it could be a white woman, but you know, I think that character, everybody would like to see it have — you know — do something different with it.”
Of course, we’ve been on board with these ideas for quite some time and though it’s got to be frustrating for Elba, I love that he simply and succinctly summed up what needs to happen. Now, let’s all hope that Broccoli and Co. are listening and understand the need to shake (not stir) the Bond Etch A Sketch, and give us a little diversity.
Meanwhile, we’ll be following Idris as Luther on BBC America, and waiting with baited breath for his next dance outing.
