You Get What You Need: HBO Reels in Big Little Lies for a Second Season

In a surprise to exactly no one, HBO’s huge hit, Big Little Lies will return for a second season — even though Australian author Liane Moriarty hasn’t written a follow up to her best-selling book. Of course, it’s the characters played by Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Zoe Kravitz, Shailene Woodley and Laura Dern we all fell in love with and with that fantastic cast committed to continue working together, does anyone even care what the story is?

There’ll be plenty of story to tell, with the after-effects following Perry Wright’s (Alexander Skarsgård) untimely demise, Celeste (Kidman) is going to have her hands full with her sons, molding them into better men than their father. Jane (Woodley) and Tom have a budding romance, Renata (Dern) has a traumatized daughter, and Maddie (Witherspoon) and Ed (Adam Scott) have a few issues to work out. The issue of domestic abuse is sure be handled with the utmost care, as much of the cast have discussed the overwhelming response to the realistic way the series portrayed the Wright’s relationship.

Additionally, casting calls have gone out for a few new characters. Happily, it looks like Kravitz’s Bonnie will thankfully have more story the second time around. Two of the new characters will be her parents, the “controlling, abusive” Elizabeth, and “emotionally distant” Martin Howard.  Also joining Season 2 will be a school administration employee who becomes close friends with Jane, and second grade teacher, Michael Perkins, who runs up against Dern’s Renata after his class causes her daughter a panic attack.

Writer, creator and showrunner, David E. Kelley will also return, writing all seven episodes, which will be partially based on a story Moriarty is writing), and Andrea Arnold (American HoneyTransparentI Love Dick) will helm the series.
