Cult: Every Time We Think We’re Out, American Horror Story Pulls Us Back In

After bouts with witches, time-tripping through asylums and covens, and hanging with freaks (oh, my!), there’s still a moment each fall when we look forward to — shudder? — in anticipation of what fresh hell American Horror Story will explore. The span of emotions fans experience as the series’ teasers unfold gear up our involuntary hyperventilating, and whether you love what your see or roll your eyes, chances are still that something about this bananas crazy show keeps you peeking through your fingers at least part of the time.

Seven seasons in, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk appear to be headed back to American Horror Story‘s roots; horror based in reality, which as fans of the genre know is most effective. When first we met the Harmon family moving into a creaky, creepy house with a dark history, we knew something special had kicked off and again, this first footage of AHS:  Cult propels us back to where fear truly resides. We are all Sarah Paulson’s Ally Mayfair-Richards as she hears the news on who’s America’s 45th president;

some of us are Evan Peters’ Kai Anderson.

Others are afraid of clowns.

Speaking of, though John Carroll Lynch hasn’t been officially confirmed to return, Twisty has, and since he played one of the series’ most riveting characters, I do hope this is more than just a callback.

Go ahead; check out this fantastic first footage, and tell me you aren’t tempted back.

Tell me you didn’t get a great Halloween vibe there? Say you aren’t in the least intrigued …

It looks like Paulson’s Ally and AHS newcomer, Alison Pill are married and running a restaurant — Pill’s character, Ivy is — and raising a child. Peters’ Kai and Ally are said to be “star-crossed lovers”, so … trouble in paradise, and that’s not even counting the clowns that terrify Ally, or this:

Cheyenne Jackson plays Ally’s therapist, Dr. Rudy Vincent. And, Billie Lourd plays the charismatic Winter Anderson, who may be under Kai’s (cult leader?) tutelage, sent to infiltrate the Mayfair-Richards’ home. Billy Eichner’s Harrison Wilton is “close” to Ally, and Leslie Grossman plays Meadow Wilton (presumably, his wife).

The first two Cult episodes are titled “Election Night” and “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark”.

Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Billie Lourd, Alison Pill, Cheyenne Jackson, Adina Porter, Frances Conroy, Mare Winningham, Emma Roberts, Lena Dunham and Chaz Bono star in American Horror Story:  Cult, premiering on FX. Grab your snacks and meet me there, September 5th.

    Every season I go in most hopeful about the prospects. It usually takes 4 or 5 episodes to really shit the bed though. Sometimes it even gets as far as 7 or 8 before I give up.
