Twilight stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have both completely broken away from that blockbuster series and what could have been stereotypical career trajectories; it’s been incredible to watch them transform as actors from those roles to the thoughtful choices they’ve made.
Case in point, Pattinson’s off-road journeys in The Rover and Cosmopolis, and what looks like could be an award-winning turn in the Safdie Brothers’ (Heaven Knows What, Daddy Longlegs) Good Time, fresh off this year’s Cannes Palme d’Or competition (Pattinson was reportedly in contention for Best Actor, though Joaquin Phoenix won for You Were Never Really Here).
Pattinson is completely captivating and at times, barely recognizable as Connie Nikas, a small time criminal whose brother, Nick (Ben Safdie) is jailed. Desperate and in a race against time to get Nick out of Rikers, Connie’s crazed plan means he’s also in danger and running from as much as to (save his brother)…
Your heart’s pumping, right? From what it looks like, Connie’s brother doesn’t have the mental capacity to defend himself against that über-creepy psychiatrist/officer, and probably tried to protect himself against some kind of advances — ending up at Rikers –where he’s truly in mortal danger. I’m a little freaked out, and at the same time, can’t wait to see this. A24 strikes again!
Good Time also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Barkhad Abdi, Buddy Duress, Taliah Webster, Shaun Rey, Marcos A. Gonzalez and Laurence Blum. It hits theaters August 11th. It wouldn’t be bad to follow in Mahershala‘s shoes.
