Oh David, why do you and your android brethren have to be such dicks?
Yeah, I said it. Because the more Alien: Covenant information, teasers, pictures and spoilers we get, the more obvious your Machiavellian meddling is. To wit, reports on the latest trailer Ridley Scott previewed at CinemaCon last week, which are very Spoiler-filled, so read on only if you don’t mind plot Spoilers.
We’ve had a good feeling David and his newer model, Walter, have been up to no good since he was clearly up to no good in Prometheus; that said, we really hadn’t anticipated the level of his involvement in the entire Alien universe. It’s huge. As confirmed by putting together puzzle parts and now, his outright admission, David may be the entire reason behind those nightmarish critters we’ve come to know and love as xenomorphs. Related by The Wrap, new footage features David watching over a mass of humans wiped out (which helps make sense of these photos), as he speaks of throwing the proverbial wrench in their plan to colonize a new planet. In voiceover, David reveals the extent his apparent free will has over our entire species.
The gods have rejected mankind as cruel, weak and full of greed. They are a dying species, grasping for resurrection. So they are leaving the earth forever. But their power is an illusion. They don’t deserve to start again, and I’m not going to let them.”
As those of us who’ve been following the tidbit trail surmised, David’s Prometheus experimentation was only the beginning. Once he and Elizabeth “It’s-an-invitation” Shaw reach the Engineers’ planet, David clearly gets right back to work, and takes things to the next level. We know from other teasers and spoilers Ridley Scott shared that David lures Billy Crudup’s Christopher Oram right to a waiting facehugger, even going so far as to assure Oram it’s “perfectly safe”. Gah! Can we now all agree not to take any direction, advice or “help” from artificially intelligent beings?
Finally, here are three new teasers called “Run”, “Hide” and “Pray”, but I can already tell you that with David and Walter in charge, that last one doesn’t have a shot in … heck.
Alien: Covenant draws ever nearer to its May 19th release.
