Holy brilliant casting moves, Batman! Whoops, wrong franchise …
Seriously, though, this is excellent news. The Star Wars universe might be about to score its first female droid, and she’s a doozy.
Variety reports the amazing (beyond amazing) Pheobe Waller-Bridge — if you haven’t seen Fleabag yet, kick yourself hard, twice, then go watch it right now — is about to sign on to the untitled Star Wars Han Solo anthology film, joining Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke in the Phil Lord/Chris Miller directed adventure.
Further, the role is said to be a “significant” part, a la Alan Tudyk’s K2SO, C3PO and Chewbacca, though it will be CGI based, which is kind of a shame, because Waller-Bridge has a wonderfully expressive face; she’s so emotive.
That said, it’s of course possible she mightn’t be a droid (maybe an alien?), but if she is, I can’t think of a cooler actress to add to the Star Wars universe. Her sense of humor is brilliant, she’s an incredible actress, and she’s absolutely poised to take the world by storm.
That’s right, Thandie Newton, folks! Though there are no details about what role Newton might play, I’m going to throw some magical words out into the universe in hopes she’ll be a nefarious leader, or a Solo rival who gets to trade wickedly witty quips with our fair lad.
This is truly a fantastic cast!
The Han Solo film is scheduled for release May 25, 2018.
