Is This Real Life? Is This Just Fantasy? What’s Happening in A24’s Untitled Science Fiction Teaser?

Hunker down, people, hunker down. This is just the sort of mystery we love.

A24 (Ex Machina, Moonlight, Room, Free Fire) nonchalantly dropped a cool science fiction trailer over on YouTube today, and though it’s now Untitled, earlier it was labeled “TOR TSR WITNESS” which means almost nothing to me. Of note is that TSR was the game company that published Dungeons & Dragons, and Tor is a science fiction/fantasy book publishing company; TOR is also a software that allows for anonymous internet browsing. Make of those tidbits what you will (probably nothing).

First, check out the trailer, then we’ll talk.

Some of the scenes appear to be taking place in a medical environment, and together with the interspersed clues:

BEYOND REALITY

REALIZE FEELING

FEEL BARE

BEAR WITNESS

WITNESS CHANGE

CHANGE IDENTITY

IDENTITY QUESTIONS

QUESTION LIFE

LIVE BEYOND

and these screencaps:

plus, a little help from Google translate:

I think we can surmise that humans are being implanted with some sort of technology that a)  allows for an experience “Beyond” our concept of virtual reality or b) allows that creepy robot/alien thing to control the humans’ experience in some way. What creepy alien/robot thing, you ask? Oh, this one, with the xenomorphic head and the evil eye:

Oddly, the scene taking place with a girl either dressing or undressing seems to be happening apart from the boy sitting in front of the snowy screen. It looks like he thinks they can’t see him.

If you saw the most recent group of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror, this may remind you of the episode called “Playtest”.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. If you have other ideas, do please add them in the comments.

Whatever this is …

Aliens. Definitely aliens. That last scene you posted, with the couple and the kid in front of the TV just looks like a really bad teenage party where the uncoupled nerd is roundly ignored by everyone hooking up around him IMO but maybe he’s invisible.

The baby was born with a terminal illness. Instead of letting him die, the parents decide to create a virtual world for him to live in. The baby is placed in a special incubator, with his brain surgically connected to VR inputs. As time goes on, the baby – now a teenager – learns that his world isn’t real. I’m willing to bet this is roughly the plot of the movie.
