I Take It Back; More Zombies, Please! The Girl with All the Gifts Looks Absolutely Fantastic

Talk about quickly having to reverse one’s opinion; apparently the zombie apocalypse genre has not yet been trampled into the ground (or maybe it just shouldn’t be a comedy?). After watching this trailer, I take back everything I said!

Colm McCarthy’s (Peaky Blinders, Sherlock, Doctor Who) adaptation of M.R. Carey’s dystopian story stars Glenn Close, Gemma Arterton, Paddy Considine and young Sennia Nanua as Melanie, whose immunity may be the key to fighting an infection that’s wiping out humanity. This teaser is positively riveting.

And not for nothing, but not a soul is carrying a barbed wire wrapped bat; that’s a big plus in my book.

Catch The Girl with All the Gifts on DIRECTV January 26th, and in theaters and On Demand February 24th.

The book was great and amazingly eerie, but I do have concerns about the whitewashing. Gemma Arterton plays Melanie’s teacher, and in the book, the teacher is clearly a dark-skinned woman with kinky hair. Those traits are part of what attracts Melanie to her in the first place. Was there a specific reason the filmmakers chose to go with a white actress for a specifically black role? If there was, I haven’t yet heard it.
