Welcome to the start of awards season; from now through the Oscars, we’ll be watching all the self-congratulatory pomp and fashionstance, because we need something to distract us from all the world’s madness. What better way to wile away your Monday morning than perusing prettiness?
Best Dresssed: I’m calling it at least a 3-way tie between these gorgeous red gowns, though Portia Doubleday’s is my absolute favorite. They’re each stunning: Chopra’s is total glamor, Maslany’s is modern and sleek, and Doubleday’s is old school sexy.
Priyanka Chopra, Jason Wu
Tatiana Maslany, Alexander Wang
Portia Doubleday, Armani Privé
Beautiful in Black: We’ve seen a lot of gorgeous pregnant women over the years, but Washington hit a new high with her incredible cutout gown, and she was literally glowing. I also love, love, love Dunst’s perfectly fitted, contrasting top and bottom. There were a ton of edgy black dresses, and they were all pretty gorgeous.
Kerry Washington, Brandon Maxwell
Kirsten Dunst, Givenchy
I didn’t want to throw off Paulson’s absolutely amazing sparkling green number by having it appear right after the red dresses (despite what the retail world thinks, it’s way too early for Christmasy stuff), but she belongs right at the top with the Best Dressed group. Stunning, styling and all.
Sarah Paulson, Prada
Gorgeous Metallics: With the caveat that Claire needs to step very far away from the self-tanner, her dripping gold is über glamorous. That said, I’m not sure with her hair and skin tone it was the right way to go. Wright’s Reem Acra is stunning, though I’m not a hundred percent sold on the straps and peekaboo lace.
Claire Danes, Schiaparelli
Laverne Cox, Naeem Khan
Robin Wright, Reem Acra
Padma Lakshmi, Naeem Khan
Pure Goddess: Bassett proves she’s great at everything.
Angela Bassett, Christian Siriano
Wistful Whites: Is summer really over? Proving it’s absolutely fine to wear white after Labor Day, these two dresses are standouts.
Tracee Ellis Ross, Ralph Lauren
Yara Shahidi, Clara Rotescu
Variations on a “Good” Theme: These are all lovely, if not in contention for best dressed.
Sophie and Maisie — although it took me a bit to come around to Maisie’s dress, ultimately her look is fresh and fun — she gave good Game.
Sophie Turner, Valentino
Maisie Williams, Markus Lupfer
Tina Fey, Oscar de la Renta
So, Amy — this is perfectly lovely, but perhaps you could have saved it for your Golden (Girls) years.
Amy Poehler, Pamella Roland
Originally — and it looked fantastic on television — this was a Best Dress contender, but in the photos it doesn’t quite fit as well as it could. That lip, though …
Kate McKinnon
Constance Wu, J. Mendel
Love this color on Viola, and the sheerness of the top. The bottom half could go much better.
Viola Davis, Marchesa
BAM!
Allison Janney, Badgley Mischka
Everybody say, “Meh”: These aren’t terrible, but they’re certainly not great or even good.
This shade of yellow isn’t the best color for Minnie; it could fit so much better, and I wish it were floor length.
Minnie Driver, Versace
I’d like to rip away the sheer on this dress!
Abigail Spencer, Jenny Packham
I love the sleeves and parts of this dress, but overall it feels like there’s just too many separate parts jammed together; sort of a Frankendress?
Carly Chaikin, Reem Acra
There’s nothing really wrong here, but overall the look makes me feel … sad?
Grace Gummer, Galvan
I get what’s happening here, but I really want to rip off the bottom third … and then it wouldn’t be an Emmy dress.
Stephanie Corneliussen, Michael Costello
Generally pretty …
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Carolina Herrera
For Peet — who is fairly terrible with fashion — this is like a best dress contender!
Amanda Peet, Altuzarra
Eh? It’s okay.
Michelle Dockery, Oscar de la Renta
She looks lovely, but the dress is boring.
Ellie Kemper, Jenny Packham
Judith Light, Alexander Vidal
NO FLESH TONES, EVER, EMILIA!
Emilia Clarke, Versace
Oh Gwendoline, you deserve so much better!
Gwendoline Christie
I want to like this, but the beige background is just not doing anything for her.
Kristen Bell, Zuhair Murad
This looked great on television, but in the only full-length picture I’ve found, the fit is questionable.
Leslie Jones, Christian Siriano
Maura Tierney, Christian Siriano
Neve Campbell, Christian Siriano
Constance Zimmer, Monique Lhuillier
Keri Russell, Stephane Rolland
Anyone else feel like this dress is trying too hard?
Emily Ratajkowski, Zac Posen
Joanne Froggatt, Stella McCartney
Worst Dressed: By a landslide, Anna.
Anna Chlumsky, Christian Siriano
At least this has … color?
Laura Carmichael, Delpozo
Gaby Hoffmann, vintage
Regina King, Elizabeth Kennedy
The Kids Can Do No Wrong: So freakin’ adorable, they are.
Millie Bobby Brown, Valentino Red; Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo
Pretty Boys:
Rami Malek, Dior
Trevor Jackson
Liev Schreiber with son Sasha
Randall Park
Joel Kinnaman, Zegna
Anthony Anderson, John Varvatos
Tom Hiddleston, Gucci

Kit Harington, Givenchy
Pedro Pascal, PB & J
