Here’s the Only Prince Tribute You Need to See

There’s been a lot of press over and since the weekend about Madonna and Stevie Wonder performing Nothing Compares 2 U and Purple Rain at the Billboard Awards Sunday night, most of it non-complimentary. Personally, I passed on watching it, as I have most of the recent honoring performances, because the only person I want to hear doing a Prince song is…well, Prince (*sob*). Musical tributes are difficult at best and nine times out of ten, serve only as negative internet fodder; who needs more of that? But, sometimes…just once in a very long while, there comes along an homage that not only captures an artist’s spirit, but also imparts just a little of what made that person so magical. This performance by The Syncopated Ladies is one such tribute, and if you don’t get chills watching this, I’ll eat my…

non-existent tap shoes? C’mon, you got chills, didn’t you?

Chloe Arnold’s Syncopated Ladies rose to fame on So You Think You Can Dance‘s 11th season, and have had rave reviews for their Beyonce-approved Formation routine.

Ok, so I definitely read the line “non-existent tap shoes? C’mon, you got chills, didn’t you?” as a standalone line, and was thoroughly confused, because those were definitely tap shoes and I did not get what the shtick was. All good now 🙂 And yes, that was incredible!

On another note, I also haven’t even bothered to watch the Madonna tribute, because I won’t let her do that to Prince. Having not seen it, I feel safe in assuming she made the “tribute” all about her and was a gaudy nightmare that Our Dearly Departed would just roll his eyes at.–litdNQCW–/c_fill,fl_progressive,g_north,h_358,q_80,w_636/19doiv8fnr78tgif.gif

    That was terrific.

Did you see this? D’Angelo, with Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum’s Prince cover band, Princess. It’s about four weeks old now, but it might still make you cry.

(New here. Nice place you have.)
