Even though I’m terrified by thoughts of the robot apocalypse, Skynet, and guys like Oscar Isaac’s Nathan (Ex Machina), there isn’t a film genre I love more than science fiction, and more specifically, science fiction thrillers. So, this news out of Cannes sets all my arm hairs tingling and though the deal was just announced, anticipation is already coursing through my veins like nanotechnology-infused adrenaline.
Skrein (aka Game of Thrones‘ Daario 1.0 and Deadpool‘s Ajax) plays Alex, creator of a “smart house” (*shudder* and fork you Amazon Echo!) run by an advanced artificial intelligence — “TAU” — and manned by armed drones. Maika Monroe (It Follows, The Guest) is Julia, the latest of Skein’s kidnapping victims (read: slated for deadly experiments) imprisoned in the house. To make her escape, Julia must try to manipulate TAU. Marvel artist and designer, Federico D’Alessandro (Doctor Strange, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World, The Avengers) makes his feature directorial debut with a Black List script by Noga Landau; David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Man of Steel) will produce.
I guess the real question here is, can Skrein dance?
Eh, it’s a start. Now let’s hope A-24 picks this one up.
