Our favorite loose-lipped Dane is at it again and by gum, does he ever know how to set our hearts pounding (again). After recently accidentally-on-purpose revealing his Rogue One role, in a new interview, Mads Mikkelsen had a few things to say about NBC’s crushing cancellation, and just how much he wants to return to complete the Hannibal story.
We are all angry. We were p****d. It’s madness,. And season four was actually the one we thought we’d definitely get. Seasons two and three were on the verge. We didn’t know whether Hannibal would be renewed. But by the time we got to season four we thought it was a definite. We were very surprised at the decision.
We were happy to be able to do it for as long as we did. However, we felt there were more stories. We thought we ended the show in a great way, but we had more to tell.”
While he wouldn’t be terribly specific about the “more stories” business, Mads did reveal just why Bryan Fuller and the actors all felt so certain about a fourth season; what might have been the series most exciting storyline was almost theirs to tell. As any Hannibal fan knows, Fuller had been working every season to secure the rights to Silence of the Lambs‘ Clarice Starling from MGM, but what we didn’t know was whether there was a real chance of that happening. Once again, Mads cleared things up:
We were very close to solving the rights issues. Silence of the Lambs was coming up around the corner, and it’s such a beautiful story with great characters.”
That’s right, my friends…as if our souls hadn’t already been ripped to shreds over the series’ cancelation, we were TFC (That Forkin’ Close) to one of our favorite Thomas Harris arcs filtered through Bryan Fuller’s brilliant brain, and played out by the fantastically talented Hannibal cast. Knowing Fuller, he’d have gotten Ted Levine in for a cameo, and his take on the Clarice/Hannibal cat and mouse game would have caused all our senses to spontaneously combust. Never fear, lieblings; Mads is still here, and he appears to know something we don’t know. Said with a “knowing glint in his eye,” Mikkelsen spoke about Hannibal‘s possible return.
It all depends on Bryan. He is the key, the base, the heart. We will wait and see what happens next in his career. But we all know that we can easily pick this up in two or three years, there are breaks in the stories. We could pick it up, say, four years later. If Bryan is up for it, we will all go for it.
He loved it. It was his baby. Let’s wait and see.”
Oh, don’t you worry, Mads…we’ll wait. I’ve got the time, and Gillian’s got the wine; we rub the lotion on our skin.
